Permaculture in Schools
Building permaculture-designed gardens in schools has many educational benefits. It is a useful strategy for teachers
wishing to develop outcomes-based education and the concepts and ideas of permaculture fit into existing curriculum
frameworks anywhere in the world.
The outside classroom allows students to learn about:
- water and nutrient cycles
- plants and animals
- soils
- ecology
- food production
- biological pest control
- horticulture
- aquaculture
- climate and micro-climates
- seasonal changes
- health and nutrition
- land use patterns
- lifeskills,groupwork skills
- and much, much more - right on nature's doorstep!
Some of the benefits of improving school grounds would be:
- offering a greater range and options of teaching strategies which will improve student learning outcomes.
- enhancing the quality of the environment, with beneficial changes to the soil, vegetation and the general
appearance of the area.
- positive improvements in students behaviour with a reduction in accidents and vandalism, and an increased
responsibility towards care and ownership.
- reduced use of resources on site. e.g. water saving can occur by better designed gardens and use of mulch in the
garden beds.
- Improving the school grounds clearly has considerable educational and social benefits.
